PS King Crimson. Now there's an influence. First band that ever made an impression on me, when I heard "In the Court of...". Some of their albums still sound vital and contemporary to me, particularly Larks' Tongues, Starless & Bible Black and Red.

Snap, crackle, and Pop--or Rock--whatever--all's I know is that I am getting my collection down, dusting it off, and placing it out in the way until I get my turntable.

And I found a CD today in that ever-growing collection that multiplies, it seems, on it's own. I did not buy it, but it is there--laugh if you will--it is a collection of tango tunes by Yo Yo Ma (sp?).

I have been listening to a lot of jazz lately, and now that I'm listening to something different it's so refreshing. I have my "metal" playlist mixed up by iTunes for me. This is what I've been hearing

I'm looking forward to some Fear Factory, Mindless Self Indulgence (woulda been funny is that was the first band name instead of the second), Danzig, Faith No More, Primus, Tenacious D, Salem, Alice Cooper, Korn, Ratt (lol), Marilyn Manson, and Anthrax. It's so very refreshing. Now I have to get sick of this, then I can go back to the jazz, or something else entirely. Maybe after this I'll go into listening to niggunim for a while. I've gotta learn some of the Bobover Niggunim I've heard, quite beautiful. But why do they have to have harmonies? lol. Just give me a straight, raw, Waits-er niggun. lol. Unplugged.

Surprised your beard hasn't fallen out with that list! Some of these bands have fallen by my wayside but I have recently been listening to Fear Factory, early (what other kind is there?) Sabbath and Primus.

If you've never heard them, I'd very much recommend Clutch.

Anyone here like Al Di Meola? I used to listen to him a lot. Ummm...there was Pace de Lucia, too--and some other guy whose name escapes me at the moment.

Anyway, Al was in my town recently. I didn't get to see him, but I read the reviews. Seems he has "plugged in" and they tell me that ear protection might be called for, but that he is still a genius.

I must check it out!

But I do understand all that tech talk you talk.

I think Al used to do a lot of stuff with Chick Corea and that bunch. Kind of like to listen to him every once in a while. Gets on everyone's nerves, but hey...takes me to Spain in my brain.

I have some stuff by Metheney (sp?) but it doesn't do a lot for me. I like even more "old school" sometimes. I can't help but love Miles. Met him once. That was a strange and....well, just strange.

You met Miles Davis . Yes, there's some strange tales about him I seem to recall (but only vaguely, as with most of my recall ).

In that vein (modern be-bop, not the strangeness), I like Tony Williams' later stuff, like Native Heart, Angel Street and Foreign Intrigue. Easy on the ears!

Hmmm... When he was a boy Miles was the son of a dentist and lived in East St. Louis, Illinois.

Under the circumstances of his upbringing and the environment that he was raised in, I would have been very surprised if he weren't strange.

Anything by Cannonball Adderly ( alto sax) when Yusef Lateef (flute) was with in the group with him is worth the price.

I REALLY liked the music of Captain Jack McDuff and Jimmy Smith when they were alive. Now that they're both gone, they don't get played that much here anymore.. I'm very partial to jazz licks performed on an old fashioned Hammond B-3. Joey DeFrancisco (sp?) is one of the few still alive that's in their class IMO.

I heard an interview with Marin Alsop the other day on National Public Radio. She will soon become the music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

In another role in 1992, she commissioned composers Bob Christiansen and Gary Anderson to do an update of Handel's Messiah. They did and now it is being performed in may places around the world. It's titled, The Messiah...Too Hot To Handel ( I think that was it). They played a few clips and it was wonderful ! Bluesy and Jazzy, but still elegant. The Hallejuah chorus is a gas !

I have always found it to be amazing that Handel claimed he was visited by an angel and then wrote the entire original score for chorus, soloists, and orchestra in 23 days. A really superhuman feat in my book. Lest anyone think that updating such saced music might be sacreligious, Mozart did an extensive update to the Messiah in his lifetime in order to add provisions for orchestral instruments that were not yet invented when Handel did the original composition.

I haven't bought a CD for a while, but I'm going to gift myself with this one this week.

For some reason, your post made me think about a concert (probably PBS) that featured Metallica (yes Metallica) playing Christmas music set to a play. Anyone remember anything about this? I thought it was amazing! Wish I could remember the name of it and more about it.

Speaking of Christmas present(s), my dear husband gave me J.T.'s new CD. Lovely! And my daughter gave him the DVD "Paul McCartney: The Space Within Us." I was just wondering if anyone has seen this one. What'ya think? Pros and cons?
