What music are you listening to?

I've got to dredge up this slightly aged thread. I'm listening to a couple of great CD's right now....

Anyone see 'Scent of a Woman'? At least, recently enough to remember the tango scene? That tango piece is called 'Por Una Cabeza' ('for a head', literally. I've heard that that's pretty risque and while I don't know Spanish colloquialisms that well, I can sure guess what it might mean! - well it is a tango piece, after all )

In the movie, it was played by The Tango Project, a group I've recently discovered, and wow. WOW. 2 violins, accordion, and bass. Their CD's are GOOOOD.

Now, if I've got my facts right, the version of this famous piece was arranged by John Williams - who has another CD: Cinema Serenade, which sounds like a hokey title, but is a collection of John Williams and Ennio Morricone movie themes as arranged for solo violin (Itzhak Perlman) and orchestra - conducted by the man himself. This also features a Williams arrangement of Por Una Cabeza, but with a few more instruments.

That Cinema Serenade CD will make you cry, if you're like that. Not exaggerating in the least.

And just an aside--saw Jerry Lee Lewis this morning on Today. 70 years old, and belting out "Been a Long Time Since I Rock and Rolled, Mama"! (Don't know if that is the actual title.) Anyway, thought it was interesting--he really didn't sound too bad doing a Zeppelin tune.

I listened to The Beatles "Love" the other day (they had it available to listen on the website, but since have taken it off), but wasn't very impressed by it. It does a lot of overlaps from different songs compiled together to give different effects on the songs, sorta hybriding them together. Then there are weird transitions between songs in the same track. And snippets of Beatle songs are scattered throughout the album.

After listening to the whole album, while interesting, I found that I didn't like it all that much. I guess I'm a purist, for I'm so used to the originals that taking the pains to altar them just doesn't work for me.

This just seems like another ploy to cash in on the Beatles name. I'd appreciate it more if they would come out with that number "2" album they've been talking about.

Don't believe I'm going to waste my money of this one.

Thanks Snoopy--yes it is. You have some old LPs? I'd still listen to mine if I had a turntable. Between me and J.H., well, it's a rather crowded top of my closet. Lots of good album cover art in there, as well.

Dondi, I got distracted and didn't get to really listen to "Love". So I am planning on giving it another shot later. But I do tend to be a little skeptical when it comes to remixes. Amazing what they can do, though.

Along those lines, it kind of irks me to see the Beatle stuff coming out on all the T.V. ads for department stores and such. That's what happens when you let the rights go like that. Hmmm...you never hear Jim Croce's stuff being used to sell cars... .

Only a few lurking in the attic. Got rid of my turntable years ago, most of my vinyl I put on cassette (which turned into the next dinosaur!!!). Tis strange to listen to music with crackles on at the beginning. Like listening to an old blues record, but it's from the 70's! Could make a guy feel old...

PS howdya do that multi quoting from different posts?

I can't keep up with "the state of the art". By the time I get there, it has fled. I still don't know what to do with the precious footing I have on videotape. Not very well, I'm afraid. Last time I tried doing it, it didn't come out so well. If I remember correctly, you copy and paste and use the "wrap quote" feature at the top of the window, inserting "=and the name of the original poster" where you first see the word "Quote". Then you repeat the process with each poster. Then you highlight the whole thing and use either the # feature at the top or the PHP--I can't remember. I'd have to just try and do it again. Anyone out there who can help us clear this up?

Or you can just quote each poster individually. Sometimes that is easier, and just as effective.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable will come to my rescue.

We've got a local station that does straight ahead jazz 24/7 during the week and an eclectic mix of music styles and genres on the weekends, including "The Grateful Dead Hour". Suffice it to say that I seldom retune my set. Got lots of tapes also, but I find myself listening to old R&B faves, Peter Gabriel, etc. on my "shuffle".

The exponential acceleration of new technology needn't mean better, but it certainly is for product manufacturers. I've not even considered transferring my videos! And we keep being warned we HAVE to get a new digital TV cos of the impending Great Switch Off of analogue TV. What, so we can watch 30 channels of c*** instead of just the 5 we have? Mobile phone? No, 1932 Belgian dial phone. mp3 player? Glad I didn't even bother with a CD walkman cos they're museum pieces. Blackberry? (or whatever fruit it is) To me, these go in puddings. Luddite and proud!

You're ahead of me. At least you have a tv (not that I miss having one, but sometimes it makes it easier to catch up on the stuff I miss in class if the stuff comes only on video cassette tapes.) Mobile phone? Who am I to call that I can't call on my regular (corded) phone? Plus, the only places where I would need to use a mobile phone, you aren't allowed to use one (doctor's offices, computer labs, libraries, class, etc.) mp3 players? Too dangerous in quite a number of ways (you can't hear what's going on around you, it is rather distracting, there are people who would kill for one [literally], etc.) Blackberries also go well in tea breads, ice cream, a dish with a little honey and fresh cream...

Flavorful, but I find the technoberries to be a bit on the crunchy side for those with dental work--not to mention the confused media signals one experiences as an aftertaste.

Hi,

Can you (or anyone else of course!) recommend any more authentic Argentine tango music, specifically instrumental? A lot of what I've checked out has vocals on which I'm not that keen on. Also heard Gotan but not enough tango in it for me. I've already got some Astor Piazolla but would like to check out some recommendations...

By the way, I got into this stuff through watching Strictley Come Dancing . Although when they do it, it's ballroom tango, it's still the best IMO. And in the last series they had a group of Argentine tango dancers perform a routine. MINDBLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As promised on the other thread (and there are more sophisticated ways of doing this), the simple way to multi-quote is to wrap quotes as usual, and then wrap quotes around all quotes. Hope that helps--if you want something fancier, I'll have to try it again myself. I'm getting old.

I listened again to "Love". As I said, it really is amazing that they can do all that, but I must admit that I am still partial to the original. Just something about the sound--and perhaps the intent. Not spending any money--this was a gift from a friend.

I once traded my copy of Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey" for King Crimson. I enjoyed it, but the trade was supposed to be temporary, and I never got my record back because I broke up with the guy and he got upset, and I guess he liked Gabriel better or something. Someone took my "Let It Be" album, too--bought it again--someone took it again. I married J.H., and now I have it back! I gotta get a turntable...I want to listen to Deep Purple, crackles and all.

And I gotta look into this tango thing.

So far my fave is still by an artist that many of us know as J.H., but I am still going to need to add J.T.'s to my collection.
