Think this deserves its own thread in Politics.

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?

Just recently saw The Last Mimzy, Radio, and Dream Girls. Taking the kids tomorrow to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The Last Mimzy is an excellent movie for kids. It's kinda like What the Bleep for kids, but it's a cool story instead of just a bunch of narrators.

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?

...Guess none of you watched "The Guardian" eh? Kinda sad...that's the story of my life (and about 35,000 others who put on the same uniform).

Did you know that the Coast Guard (United States), rescued 35,000 people in three weeks from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and only used 400 personnel to do it? Did you know we never left Louisiana during the hurricane, and lifted our aircraft the second the winds died down one knot below 55, and while our Coast Guardsmen were busy rescuing others, 200 of them lost homes and property, but never looked back once?

They never turned from their job, never left the scene, never once said "I quit".

Y'a ought to watch The Guardian, if you want to see real heroes at work, and in life...

The movie is based on two actual situations (combined into one for the audience). What you see is real, no Hollywood embellishment. But it will keep you in your seat.

Truth is much more exciting than fiction sometimes...

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?

Q,

I shall make it my business to see The Guardian once I have the means. In the meantime, I ran across an interesting (to me) anime that might interest you titled Yomigaeru Sora Rescue Wings. It is about a fictional unit in Japan similar to the Coast Guard (I'm not sure if the JASDF is an actual group or if it's fictional.) Here's a link to some more information about the "cast"/anime: Froth-Bite wiki - Rescue Wings

If you're interested, I'll send the :kitty: delegation out to find out where to get the anime.

Indeed Phyllis, I'd be interested in anything you find. You have a way of "ferretting out stuff", that might otherwise be missed.

p.s. you won't be disappointed in "The Guardian". If you go to the local Chicago Library, I think you can check it out for a few days without buying or renting it.

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?

Here's the first episode from Crunchy Roll (you have to register in order to watch anything on the site, but the registration's free):

crunchyroll.com - Yomigaeru Sora Rescue Wings

One good thing about the site is that they usually abide by the wishes of the owners of any licensed videos by removing the videos (several series I wanted to see were removed at the request of the owners of the licenses.) One word of warning though: episodes 5-8 have a bit of a problem with the uploads due to "blinking".

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?

One of my favorite short stories is the one The Last Mimsy is based on. I'm a little scared to watch the movie because the story was just that good.

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?

Two that I've seen recently are Little Miss Sunshine which I thought was excellent. Such a poignant story and, on the whole, excellent acting.
also Breakfast on Pluto which is also well worth a watch.

Dejavu...a very informative portrayal of the inventive and intrusive techniques being utilized with the new quantum technologies these days. Much in the genre of "Minority Report"...but more fun in a cops 'n robbers sort of way. Denzel is just great in it.

flow....

Green Street Hooligans!!
Hooligans (2005)

Awesome film about some yank that get's thrown out of Harvard, and moves to London where his sister lives, and his brother-in-law introduces him to the GSE (Green Street Elite) and the underground world of football hooliganism.... Sweet film...

Sex lives of the Potato men.
Sex Lives of the Potato Men (2004)

More of an English comedy, so I only think people from my island will appreciate this one. It has it's moments.... Which are pretty funny, and yeah, quite entertaining.....

Dave: [Sees Ferris trying to do crazy paving] What happened here?
Ferris: It's crazy paving.
Dave: This isn't crazy paving Ferris, this is just s***.
Ferris: I was trying to... you know?
Dave: You've got no artistic vision here, have you? It's just a random f***** big mess.
Ferris: It's crazy paving, you just bung slabs down.
Dave: No, I think you're focusing too much on the crazy aspect, and not enough on the paving side of it.
Ferris: Have you come round here just to have a go at my crazy paving?
Dave: No, but...
Ferris: What then?
Dave: Nothing.
Ferris: [stands up and moves aside] You're standing on my string.
Dave: What kind of concrete are you using? Cause you know there's different kinds, don't ya?
Ferris: I'm not being funny Dave, but you're getting on my nerves.
Dave: I'm just saying there's different types of concrete. Use the wrong one and... you're f*****!
Ferris: It's just ordinary concrete!
Dave: Tolly is driving me round the twist. He never stops w******. I just had to get out of there.
Ferris: Try living here with Joan. Twenty-four hours a day it's either blowjobs or crazy paving.
Dave: Look at us. Half-eleven on a Saturday morning. We shouldn't be standing here like this. We're young blokes! We should be living life to the full. We should be down the pub!

Re: What Movies Have You Seen Recently?

I just saw that one with Ben Stiller about the museum that comes to life. It was very good. Someday I would like to go to a museum and watch it come to life and play fetch with a dinosaur skeloton because that would be cool. And then I will play charades with Atilla the Hun. The end.

Harry Potter
Very good, surprisingly so. It had a very different feel to the other movies, it was more character driven, and focused on the relationsips between different characters. It was thoughtfully made and has a great supporting cast aswell.
