Thoughts?
Firstly... Note, (please) that I am being serious.... I have put this post within the walls of comparative as I couldn't fathom where else it would fit... I am now going to show you a series of photos.... These photo's all have a few things in common... The main thing they have in common what I wish for you to firstly focus upon is the hand jesture that is made by the people within the photos... And perhaps you can inform me other other meanings for the hand jesture as I only know of one meaning for it.... And that meaning shouldn't be associated with the people in the pictures.......

Re: Thoughts?
No, it is a gesture that has left the stadium and has become almost like a handwave amongst folks, it is like an acknowledgment... the one with the Queen was probably when he noticed some friend in the crowd or someone 'gave' him the hookem horns and he casually responded without hollerin, "Howdy Tex, didja leave the missus on the ranch?"

I didn't know about the satanic salute, makes sense, horns...horns used to mean holy, but that was another thread... If you google longhorn salute or hand signal, hookem horns salute or hand signal you'll see the same pictures of the presidential family as everyone is posting under satanic salute... I wonder why they aren't putting all the other Texans in there? Do you contemplate a skull and bones link? |

In Japan it is my understanding you take a business card when offered with both hands and review it, nodding in admiration prior to putting it in your breast pocket. Whatever you do, don't pull out your wallet and place it in your back pocket, an indication that I will sit on your enterprise and consider you below my ass. In Asia you when entering a car for a trip to dinner you offer the seat behind the driver to your guest, this is the most honored seat as furthest from discussion with the 'help' the driver which would be the lowest position in the car. Who knows how many little secret handshakes or gross improprieties we can make without being aware...as you had no awareness of the longhorns, I had no awareness of the satanic salute, so much we can learn here on CR, and often by our misconceptions! |

Yeah I believe that context is the critical thing in the interpretation of symbolism and the giving of signs. Knowing our President as we do I would say that his and his family's use of the horn sign is definitely a signalling of pride in their home state Texas. He lived in Austin Texas for quite a few years as Governor of the state, and that's where the University's main campus is located. Despite being a target of derision in some quarters for its provincial tendencies, The University of Texas is a world class institution with many programs and scholars that are recognized as world leaders in their fields. They also have good football teams year in, and year out. No I believe that their tendency to use the "hook 'em horns" signal is tantamount to saying, "look, I'm from Texas, I'm here, and I'm somebody important". Now if I were strolling down a busy street on the near northwest side of Chicago and two young Puerto Rican men in hooded sports jackets flashed the sign at me when walking by, it would likely be a gang recognition sign of some sort. I would likely flash back a "thumbs up" and give them a smile and a nod, acknowledging that they are ruling their turf and policing it to their satisfaction. I'd also be showing them that yes I am an outsider and that I'm a stranger on their turf and I really am a "live and let live" guy with no agendas against them or their interests. The word "bulls**t" has nothing whatsoever to do with either scenario, unless you wish that to be true as an individual. Maybe George did believe that it was bulls**t to be the Queen's escort, or Laura did believe it to be bulls**t to be strolling away from a Marine helicopter with her husband the President, but I doubt that. However, intercultural communications has everything to do with what's really going on. My two cents. flow.... |

Re: Thoughts?
I think it may be, in the American context, a sign indicating, "I am at least slightly ignorant, and I enjoy that." It has been documented in use not only by the Texas nobility, but also by Beavis and Butthead.

Re: Thoughts?
well, as well as the texas bull thing, and of course, ur ave satanas, this symbol is also a hand symbol used in tantra, called a mudra (skr, literally: sign).... in tantric buddhism the sign is called-taranji mudra, the gesture of warding off evil... the sign is also used by esotericists to denote duality...
