Ten Comandments and Angels

1. Question: Were the Ten Comandments given to the children of Isreal for religious purposes or practical purposes?

My Thoughts: IMHO, I feel that the comandments were given to ensure that the covenant between Abraham and God was fulfilled concerning increasing his house and were more practical in nature than religious.


Example: "Thou Shalt not Kill", if obeyed, will cause a population to grow.

Side note: There is a measurable population growth in the houses of the children Isreal in the book of numbers. Is this because of the practical measure of not killing each other or is it religious in nature?

Any thoughts?


2. Question: Do Angels really have wings?

My thoughts: IMHO, I feel that it is highly questionable that angels have wings. In reading the bible, so far, I have not come across any good description of the physical traits of an angel. Most of the time they are not described physically but only described as doing "something".

Example: Genesis 28:12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and theangels of God were ascending and descending on it.

Side note: Why would Angels need a ladder if they had wings? Is my avatar an angel or a Nephilim?

Why either/or? Why not both?

Interesting, considering the Ten Commandments were given to Moses, quite a while after Abraham. Not saying "not possible," it would be interesting to see you draw the connections...

Possibly. Considering the way the story is told, G-d led Israel out of bondage and out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and through the wilderness with the same mighty hand, and led them to conquer foes mightier than they in the land promised them by His mighty hand, I could also be inclined to believe that the population increase was as much the direct result of G-d's mighty hand. Not to mention the decree issued at Eden; "go forth, be fruitful and multiply."

2. Question: Do Angels really have wings?

Good question, don't know for sure. There's only two times I wonder if I saw angels. One was a non-descript middle aged white man in a plane crash in the Potomac river (I watched it on the TV news back in the '80's). He saved person after person in the freezing water, including a pregnant flight attendent with a broken leg (or was it arm, it's been a while). After everybody was rescued they went back for him, and he was gone. They did not rescue him. I heard they never found his body. I often wonder if he was an angel.

Another time I was driving a tractor-trailer up around Greenville South Carolina. I had just dropped off a load, and was back on the road headed for where I don't remember. It was raining, hard. As the rain got harder and harder, the old Chevrolet in front of me kept going slower, forcing me to slow down. Finally, the car pulled onto the shoulder and stopped, but the tail end was still in the lane. I started to go around, but it was raining so hard I couldn't see in my mirror what was beside me. I couldn't pull into the next lane blind, I might hurt somebody. So I waited, and the storm finally eased up after a few minutes. Boy, was I hot! I was so mad at the two old black men in that piece o' junk Chevy, I was fit to be tied! But as we started up the road, I saw police cars already assessing damage and rerouting traffic. I saw billboards blown over, I saw trees uprooted. A tornado had just gone through. Thanks to my two guardian angels, who looked like two old black men going fishing in a beat up Chevrolet, I was spared. I think about that from time to time, just to keep me straight.

Angels exist, I'm convinced, but I don't think they even need wings.

My thoughts, maybe there are others here?

I've pondered this myself sometimes. I'm inclined to believe that some of the commandments (all 613 of them) were given for practical reasons and others for religious reasons. The laws of Kashrut--Practical reasons? Not eating pork, for example, given the numerous dangers of not cooking it properly pose, seems practical. That said, I still wouldn't touch the stuff.

Other rules are very clearly nonsense when examined logically. Why were the Israelites to sprinkle the ashes of the red heifer on anyone who came into contact with a dead body to purify them? And even moreso, why does the priest who is doing the purification become impure in the process? That doesn't make any sense.

The Ten Commandments are the same... They're both practical and religious.

Are you talking about the numbering of the Tribes at the beginning of the book or the fact that the entire older generation of Israel died off and was replaced by a younger generation?

Seraphims are a type of angel found in the Bible, they have at least six wings if my memory serves me correctly...
two wings to cover their feet
two wings to cover their face
and two wings to, erm, fly?

I suppose if the Nephilim had wings they could have survived the flood.

Minor anal correction here... "Seraphim" is already plural, so there's no need to add an "s". The singular form is seraph.

Im talking about the size of the population before Ten comandements were given as compared to after the Ten comandements were given and were obeyed by Tribes.

Good answer. , but do the seraphim have human bodies with wings. Is there a description of them having human bodies and wings. The wings are described, no doubt, but not the human body with it.
So, could my avatar be more a Nephilim than an angel. Given the fact that Angels are never described as having bodies like humans. Could the image of my Avatar be a representation of how a nephilim may have looked? The mix of humans and Angels? (i.e. wings with human bodies.)

The Ten Commandments are the same... They're both practical and religious

The definition of the word religion is this: Oxford dictionary definition (theistic): "1 the belief in a superhuman controlling power, esp. in a personal God or gods entitled to obedience and worship. 2 the expression of this in worship. 3 a particular system of faith and worship." Non-Theistic definition: "The word religion has many definitions, all of which can embrace sacred lore and wisdom and knowledge of God or gods, souls and spirits. Religion deals with the spirit in relation to itself, the universe and other life. ...


If you look at the definition itself, the Ten Commandements really do not concern much in dealing with GOD, but more to do with how we humans deal with each other, there by making them more practical than religious. Most of them do not have a "worship tone" to them but do have a "way of life" feel.


Logically, If the priest comes in contact with the situation of purification, he too will be "un-pure" in the process. Sort of like a doctor who comes in contact with an ill patient. Even though they take necessary steps not to be infected, naturally they will take additional steps after contact to ensure they are not infected.

I too do not pork.

The connection here is that the promise to Abraham was fulfilled through his ancestors. The Tribes grew in numbers and got land to nurture those numbers.

Due to the fact that it took "slavery" for them to fully realize there potential is also amazing. too. The Link could go like this

GOD+Abraham(covenant)+Issac+Isreal/(12 sons)+Moses(Freedom &
Commandements)=Tribes grow and get Land and (covenat fulfilled)

Side Note: During the Late 70's in Louisiana, me (5 or 6 yrs old), my father, and brother (9 or 10yrs old) were on a long country road with a flat tire and no spare at about 10pm at night. The town was know for its racisims (white people did not help balck people on this road) and a white guy drove up, did not say a word and changed our tire with us sitting in the car looking at him. He smiled at me and my brother and waved at my father. He changed the tire and never said a word (literally) not a word. He drove off after he finished and we tried to catch up to him and thank him but he was gone. The road did not have any places for him to turn off at or drive into the woods. Just a long road. The guy literally vanished. To this day my father thinks that he was an Angel. Needless to say, I do not remember any wings.
