Re: Smoking

For those that aren't aware cigarette ads in the 40's and 50's actually touted the benefits of smoking. Doctors representing that this cig or that was the most healthful...somehow they were sold the bill of goods that smoking provided healthy lungs...go figure.

It wasn't until the 70's it seems that cigarette ads were removed from television...and warnings were put on packs of cigarettes...

Kids today think it cool to smoke, in the 40's and 50's it was downright normal.

Tis a trap I don't wish on anyone.

What doesn't bother (me, us, smokers.. whoever.) ?

The things that can lead from smoking... No they do not bother me... Even if I were to die a smoking related death and I could still move and so on... My death bed wish? A last cigarette... Indeed it's bad for you... Fudge it... I like it. It's a choice that everyone else has got no power over on anyone but themsleves... If you don't like people smoking, avoid them... Simple.

Not all people die young because of smoking... My gran only passed two years ago..... 102 years old. Smoked over 20 a day.... So could I say... Smoking helps you live longer? No.... Because who really knows? Smoking effects everyone differently as we are all built differently... I could die tomorrow when I am 40, 60, 70... 80...(hope I don't live that long lol...) But I don't care... I would rather live a life of doing what -I- wanted to do.. A life free... A life not restricted by what the majority think, I couldn't give a fudge what the majority think about smoking... I like it... So I will continue till the grave.

Seems fair enough, I'm curious about your views on public bans. Isn't England planning to ban fags in all public buildings?

And cigarettes as well?

But I thought England was equal opportunity.

Re: Smoking

oops, using the vernacular on an international forum isn't the best idea.
The simple request, "can I bum a fag?" takes on all new proportions.

Re: Smoking

Hi,

Dubious humour aside, if someone wants to ingest something that is statistically quite likely to be the cause of their death then fine go ahead EXCEPT that with tobacco unless it is banned in public places then non-smokers would have to avoid PUBLIC places if they wanted to avoid the foul-smelling (probably carcinogenic) outpourings. Public is meant to mean public so I think the onus is on the smoker to stay away from public places when they want to smoke. I don't see why I should stay away from PUBLIC places just because other people want to make the air noxious.

Seems fair to me, I just wanted to hear what an unabashed smoker had to say on that matter

Sort of begs the question, what would a "bashed" smoker be?

Re: Smoking

Indeed, they have banned smoking in most places... However (I live in the sticks) My local pub and other places of public "gathering" seem to disregard this law. I think fine, In a restaurant where people are eating or whatever go ahead ban it if you must... But not pubs, what are you... stupid? This is a place you go to expect drinking and smoking, will they ban alchol next from bars because thats bad for you?

Dondi.... *sighs* Americans..... A fag is a smoke, a cigarette, a roll up, a straight, a cancer stick..... Strange how people pick up and instantly take offense or you know get that "feeling" when someone says fag.... It's an everyday used term here... Harmless.

Snoopy.... You don't see why you should have to stay away because people smoke? Who the hell says that? It's you who decides to go somewhere or not... "I don't see why I should have to stay away from (some place) because they don't like smoking....." Goes both ways. I just think our world is become a bunch of pansys..... Can't do this, don't do that! Oh that will hurt! oh that will kill you thats bad for... Oh shut up and let people make up they own freaking minds... heh. Go back ten years twenty years? (if you can) When you went to a pub back then how many issues about smoke in a public house were there?...

Hi,
Indeed, it is me that decides. There are places that I would like to go but I don't because I don't want to breathe in noxious air. Someone who smokes isn't putting their health at risk by going into a smoke-free environment.

Probably less but as a society we are more informed about the health dangers. In some ways we have progressed; drink/driving, smoking, diet, bare-knuckle fighting, bear baiting, dog fighting... Over time practices that were once considered acceptable become unacceptable (generally...)

It can be an unpredictable world... Who's to say that they are not putting their health at risk? May find out ten years down the line something else isn't acceptable... "You what!? Go to salad bars?! But don't you know there is blah blah blargh in lettuce and tamtoes?!?! It gives you cancer of the face!"

Bare-knuckle fighting... *sigh of content* Whats wrong with that ;/ heh.

I guess things that were acceptable have indeed become unacceptable to some. I think it's like fashion... (fur coats for example.) Things that were unacceptable, I am sure in time shall become acceptable... And again I guess alot of what is already seen as acceptable shall be deemed evil :O

Re: Smoking

Too a degree, I think it is good.... Obviously not to the death... Or "no holds barred" but yeah... Good discipline.

I understand about things like the bear/bull baiting and dog fighting... That you can clearly see why it should never be acceptable.... (I own staffords..... The orginal 'pit bull' I could never put them through such a hideous event.)
