significance of five

the punjab is the land of five rivers. i would like to understand the importance of the number five in sikhism and would appreciate some explanation of the five symbols of sikhism, the dagger, the hair, the bracelet, the shorts and whatever the other one is. they all begin with a K i believe. why is this?

b'shalom
