Lol.... read a good article about the upcoming elections in Bhutan, amazing that there is a place where the main political worry is the GNH. This is the kind of political thinking we need more of.

Tao
Are you sure Tao, cos it’s based on “Buddhist spiritual values” (as per the Wiki page)

Until recently there was relatively little crime in Bhutan and then Western TV channels were allowed into the country. Guess what’s happening now (it’s not difficult)…

As an aside, we have a sign hanging up at home that says “Gross Domestic Happiness”

Self induced happiness? Would the opiate lover wash the feet of his neighbor? I have mentioned terms like 'sacrifice' or 'confession' to a few opiate addicts and received either lies or duplicitous reasonings why they were exempt. One insisted that God wanted everyone to be happy and that my words were not making him happy... of course, he was also the one who missed a sign and drove the wrong way down the freeway.

John 13:17 If you know these things, happy are you if you do them.

So then by the reasoning presented so far that would mean that Jesus was patronizing. What a patronizer. How dare he suggest that I am happy if I wash the feet of my neighbor... and know why. He forgot to mention Zen Buddhism. He did not mention the introspective who might just prefer to wash their own feet, and clear their own mind.

When an opiate is removed, it is easy to spot an addiction.

I always read that as blessed. Blessed is happy I suppose, but more than happy to me.

Yes... there is more. A bit of entropy in the translations: Blue Letter Bible - Lexicon

Re: Religion 'linked to happy life'

Im not sure what the point is.
I mean I always knew all of this but it doesnt seem to lead to the same attitude Im seeing. Whats wrong with this as a way to happiness? Is there an alternative? Or are you saying "wake up and feel crummy"?

Heehee. Shades of Monty Python.
And the return would be "we have the glorious future of being natures way of creating bigger better monkeys"

I guess even if flagellation was someones idea of smoothing out their day then it wouldnt necessarily be bad. An old fashioned version of "no pain, no gain"?

Re: Religion 'linked to happy life'

I heard about another study that found that women with depression have more sex. They need it to feel secure. So if you want to have more sex, get depressed. Complacency and depression = happiness and security. Gotta get me some of that!

Its most probably because we arent as attached to this world in comparison to other people.
