Re: New Banner

Hi Flow

I feel sure Brian would not wish these but I wanted to point them out so that if there is anything he can do to stop them, he can. I know sites have to make money and advertising is the easiest way to do that. Brian provides a brilliant service here but to be honest I would prefer to pay to be a member than be subjected to such offensive advertising.

I never noticed them when they were just at the top of the screen but the new ones can't be avoided as they are between the bar that you press for User CP, etc and the posts. I thought maybe I was being a bit prudish with the half naked woman but this new one has a picture with what is obviously meant to be blood and it upset me.

Re: New Banner

Well, my banners all want me to convert to Judaism. I'm not sure what that plot is about.

Besides the proselytizing, I don't like the new banner because it takes up a heckuvalot more room than the old banner. Whenever I open up CR, I get stared down by either the conversion trip or some advertisement for a Christian magazine.

It's not a big deal really, but thought I'd chime in with my disgruntlement.

Now I have to go find some kosher food. They are watching. I'm sure of it.

Re: New Banner

MW...salaam allaykum...

Cool your jets lady. These strategies and technological targeting routines were mostly originated, developed, and perfected under corporate sponsorship at the Media Lab at MIT beginning in the 80's and continuing to this day. Lots of companies and people are making lots of money with these burgeoning sets of systemic digital intrusions upon our psyches. As you know these sorts of thingys are always on the dark side of capitalism these days. Realities always become illusions...and vice versa...if they sell.

Getting our collective knickers into bunches of knots isn't going to change the BIG picture. All we can hope is that Brian pays attention to our squeakings and takes some steps to bring the advert content more into alignment with the general tenor of the attitudes at CR.

How's everything else my sweet ? Nice day out here in the great American desert...but hot.

peace...flow....

Re: New Banner

wa aleykum salaam Flow

Hee, hee I was actually joking, not quite that paranoid yet (I hope).

Other than that things are wet, it has rained here for 8 weeks. Oh sorry that's a fib we had 3 days without rain last week. The roads are flooded, the horses are up to their hocks in mud and it's mid July. Ho hum, the joy of the British countryside. It is silly when I am Egypt I miss the rain so much but when it rains every day you miss the sun and sand. Typical girlie, never satisfied.

Just cause you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't following you...

If I understand how some of the google ads work they search the page you are looking at and put appropriate ads based on the page keywords...so those little spyders crawling thru our pages have identified certain posts...and you..and seen the words Islam, muslim and odds are the anti-islam ads have put these keywords in as the preferred places for them to be...so yes...maybe they are following you...(I haven't seen any of them!!)

and women...yes is there any woman who is satisfied with her hair thickness, curls or lack there of and color...or do all women always want to have someone else's hair....and then someone else's next week?

Re: New Banner

Hi Wil

OMG I was right, they are following me ...... help!!!!!

I think you are right about the spiders, I just found the anti-Arab (well to be honest they seem to be anti-everyone) advert again, it is on the We don't need "War on Terror" thread. It does make me wonder which thread brought up a half naked woman though

Can't anything be done about them? Can't they be moved right to the top or the bottom so I don't have to look at them? Sorry but I really am finding them disturbing.

Am off to hide under the bedclothes so they can't get me.

Salaam

Re: New Banner

I have noticed that the ads have got bigger. At the moment there is one saying "enter here" with a big cross over a landscape.
maybe I should click and see what would happen when I enter. I havn't seen naked ladies yet, and certainly wouldn't like it. I have fallen upon the s*x sites sometimes totally innocently- some poet I know let her website lapse and when I clicked on it was for some s*x stuff.

I ignore .. I am also cutting down on online activity in general

Re: New Banner

Just checked out the "click me" cross banner....................

"The Nazareth Cross Project aims to build the world’s largest and most impressive Cross, standing at 60 meters tall, housing a magnificent church in its center. The Cross will be decorated by some 7.2 million brilliant mosaic tiles of varying sizes, each one with a personal engraving. These tiles will be made of stone from Nazareth,
or platinum, silver or gold.
The breathtaking Church with its panoramic view will be located at the intersection of the arms of the cross, 15 stories high, and will contain over 4500 square feet of floor space.
In the 2.5 square miles (5 km2) surrounding this monumental Cross,
a visitor center will be built to offer a unique inspirational experience as well as a world-class educational and leisure center.
The central location of the church together with a circular monorail transportation system will provide pilgrims easy access to and from the historic Christian churches, the Fountain of Mary and the city’s central bazaars.
The Nazareth Cross will also become the entrance point to Nazareth Village – an archeological park revealing the most ancient part of Nazareth while presenting a re-creation of its daily life during the
time of Jesus."

Is this for real ? An interpretive centre for jesus...looks like a complete scam to me

Re: New Banner

Oh how nice another "give us your money and our religion will save your soul" scam (all religions have em ).

Okay now I am really scared. I've got spiders following me with offensive adverts and now people are threatening to cut back on internet time I can feel withdrawal symptoms setting in and it's not even me that's withdrawing. I want my Mum.

There is a simple solution!! truly there is you just start and end every thread with the following...cut and paste where necessary: Big soft cuddly toys. Peace. Harmony. And more big soft cuddly toys.
Seriously, as Flow pointed out these ads appear based on set algorithms and are as about as effective as the rhythm method of birth control. I doubt Brian has a lot of say. Best try to ignore.

The only one that REALLY scared the crap out of me was the giant advert that showed Newt Gingrich's picture. Almost threw my beloved laptop off the balcony !

Re: New Banner

I was just thinking that maybe it helps not to click on the ads...just a thought. Of course, that doesn't seem to stop them anywhere else in life, so it is probably not any different on the virtual scene. I have always wondered why it doesn't matter how low I put the T.V. volume down, the ads always scream at me anyway. It seems the less tasteful I find a subject, the louder it screams! I was enjoying catching up on old Star Treks there for a while, but then some of the ads got so bad, especially late at night, that I stopped watching at least in that time slot.

I remember when The Mad Lib thread was hot here in CR. I got tickled because all the ads had to do with jelly beans....

Jelly beans, jelly beans, jelly beans, jelly beans.

Did it work, or are they still advertising quick and easy ministerial licenses?
