Marriage made in Heaven?

I read somewhere that the Talmud states that forty days before a child is born, the Heavens decree whom they will marry. Is there any validity to this? How does one know that you found the right one? Does God play matchmaker?

Re: Marriage made in Heaven?

well, there are a number of opinions that are held on "aggadic" statements like this, namely that it may very well be the case, but, either way, we cannot really know. there is of course a concept that people are "predestined" for each other, but, as you will remember, the Torah certainly permits divorce, albeit regretfully. it being aggadah, one can of course interpret the statement however one wishes, within reason.
