Has anyone been watching this program? I suppose this will only apply to U.S. members. If anyone is getting it elsewhere, by all means, chime in.

Wow--shades of "Dances With Wolves". Great stuff, so far, IMHO.

Well, I posted that question in June, and here it is nearly August. I am still wondering if anyone has been watching this saga? This weekend is the conclusion of the miniseries on TNT. Today, I noticed The History Channel was running the biography of Jedidiah Smith--interesting.

Just still wondering--is anyone but me watching this?

Well, I just thought I would bring it up one more time in order to say that it is going to be out on DVD this fall, I think. So if anyone does watch it in the future, remember this thread, and come back and talk with me about your impressions. Okay? (If you were affected by films like Dances With Wolves or Jeremiah Johnson, Or if American History is something you like to study, I can almost guarantee that you will find Into the West will hold your attention.)

The reason I am so interested in discussing this production here in CR is that it addresses multi-cultural concepts of religion, as well as assimilation, division, and blending of European and Native American beliefs, and the different paths that individuals followed over three or four generations during the "development" of the western frontier. It is a subject in which I am personally invested in more ways than one, and I am looking for a way to open dialogue in this regard.

Anyway--someone go get the DVD in the fall, and come back and talk to me!

I watched the whole series, excellent show I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'll be picking it up on dvd when it comes out.

Yay! Someone to finally talk with about this!

I would venture to say that eventually this thread might need to be moved to another board because of the issues brought up in the series. But for now, I will just ask you, capthowdy, if you think the program will be easier to follow when one can watch each segment without having to wait a week or two between?

Also, what did you think about the choice to use different actors instead of make-up for many of the characters as they aged?

And here is where the conversation may lead to a need to move, but perhaps not yet--how true to history do you think this account really is? (I realize that some of the characters may be fictional in name, but I believe they are meant to represent the lives of many at that time.)

I look forward to any thoughts....

i watched a few episodes...


but... i confess... that i find it tedious and altogether unpleasant to watch movies with commericals in them.

thus, i am eagerly awaiting the DVD release

i found the delimma of the Wheeler brothers to be quite poignent.. espeically after the found the huge rock of gold...

Oh, yippee! I am so glad to get some responses! Thanks, Vajradhara--I know what you mean about the commercials. I wouldn't mind them so much if they would time them for when I need to leave the room.

Yeah I think it should be easier to follow when you can watch it all in succession, and I liked the choice for different actors as the characters aged they did well matching them up. As far as historical accuracy, I think they achieved it, especially with the indians stories. In my opninion, it was an all around good show very entertaining and it kept me tuning in week after week.

I was particularly enthralled by the stories of the lives of Margaret Light Shines, and her brother (I think), George Voices That Carry.

I don't know whether it is okay to post the link, but if you type in "Into The West", and go to the official website, you can actually view the family tree, which would be entirely cool if I could figure out how to get the pictures out from in front of it so I could actually read it!
