Re: Independent Voting
Hi wil--
First let me say that I am here to learn. I think we all know that I am not the brightest star in the political science class.
Sooo...are you talking about Joe? The dad? I don't know much about the Kennedy family history. Maybe you can elaborate, if you want? Was there another "Jack"?
JFK was not running on a civil rights platform? If he wasn't, then a lot of people who voted for him did so under the wrong impression?
I know that the party was unhappy with him for wanting to pull the troops out of Vietnam. And I hear that he may have engaged in some very inappropriate pillow talk with a certain blonde bombshell. But I still thought that civil rights was something for which he really stood?
Hmmm....guess I could spend the day surfing, but frankly, I like it here.

Re: Independent Voting
Well, okay, I couldn't resist a little surfing. I found this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_political_family
Apparently there was another "Jack". Would have been a great uncle or something, right?
That link is just family history. I'll look for something juicier, even if it does hurt.

Re: Independent Voting
Was it only after the Freedom Riders were killed that the civil rights issues were forced?

Re: Independent Voting
two strikes against me...memory failing....yes Joe Kennedy, I never think of JFK as Jack...we weren't as close as that blond was...
And JFK did ride the wave in 1960 after voting for the watered down 1957 civil rights bill.

Re: Independent Voting
Yeah, wil--you are right about the civil rights issues not really being part of the official party platform.
Here's an interesting link about the Freedom Riders that tells a little bit about it. Mostly talks about Bobby's role in things, though.

Re: Independent Voting
Hi All--
Well, I thought I'd just stop in and give you an update on the situation. (InLove groans inwardly and shakes head in dismay.)
Sadly, I have given up on the Independents this time. Oh, how I wanted to believe! But I guess I will be punching the chads in an effort to swing the pendulum all the way to the other side once again. That is, if I can get there at all--I'm stuck 100 miles away from my precinct, and don't see much of a chance of getting back in time. I wish I had realized--I would have done the absentee thing.
Poor, poor pitiful me....

Re: Independent Voting
IL, at least you try to vote.
Imagine living less than 1/8 mile away from your polling place, but are too lazy to go out and vote. The last major election here in Milwaukee was roughly six weeks after I broke my ankle, but I walked to the polling place that is between 1/16th and 1/8 mile away, yet there were people who lived just upstairs from the polling place who were fully capable of getting on the elevator and coming downstairs, yet they didn't bother coming down to vote (ditto for the dorms at three of the major univerities here in Milwaukee.)
I sometimes talk with my Ukrainian friend/professor about the political situations both here in the US and in the former USSR, and he's often surprised how verbally vehement I get when it comes to "If you don't vote, don't b****." People "over there" have gone to their polling places under fire (like Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, etc.)
If I don't like any of the candidates, I'll just mark the "write-in" spot, but not put a name in (I still vote for that particular office, just not the candidates for the particular office.) Now, Milwaukee is having to vote for a new DA (McCann is finally retiring, and he was one of the candidates I used to do the "write-in trick.)
Heck, Milwaukee had Socialist mayors before (the only city to have them, if I recall correctly, but correct me if I'm wrong, YO.)
Sorry for my off-topic rant, here. *hands out cute, furry :kitty:s, then slinks off to the Mope Corner*

Re: Independent Voting
Found an interesting place this year RealClearPolitics nice combination of polls and information.
I'll not be voting against anyone this season. I will be voting Green, Libertarian, or Independent mostly depending on the seat and candidate. There are a couple of status quo Dems and Reps in my mix. While I indicated I don't vote against anyone, I also don't vote for incumbents.
The day we get entirely new blood in our system will be a good day. The vot'em out concept will also flood the lobbyists with so many ex politicians to water down their abilities and at the same time break the old boys network's back. Plus two terms means full retirement benefits...

Re: Independent Voting
Hey, wil--
I am all for getting the toxic lead out of our government, but in this particular race (which I have watched very closely), I have decided that, this time, I just cannot place my trust in either of the Independents I wanted to support. The only candidate that I see getting anything done is one from a "traditional" party. I really did not want to discover this.
As much as I would love to vote "for" someone completely with my heart and conscience, I have to say that I will be casting my vote against the gubernatorial incumbent, if indeed I can manage to get back home to vote. I guess that will be the best I can do (for said conscience) this time around.
<sigh>

Re: Independent Voting
The 'others' are getting larger.
Those that are now answering 'other' on polls are beginning to be noticed.
Not caucasion or white, not black or african american, not hispanic, native american, not asian or pacific islander, answer 'other'
Other is growing, and has curious political opinions. In races where it is 47/44/3 others are voting 30/27/40...others for some reason are polling as more independent, more third party...
So make yourself heard when the pollsters call you, if you are not happy with status quo, join 'others' like yourself.
I really don't think the dems or reps really care which party is in charge as long as the two of them maintain control...I actually think the Reps are a little peeved as to how they've handled power for the past 10 years and realize they had more power being in the second seat and whining. It is harder to be on top and have everyone shootin at you and blamin you for mistakes...back seat driving and monday morning quarterbackin is far easier.

Re: Independent Voting
Yeah, wil, I do see where you are coming from. I think Phyl said something along the same lines.
But, but, but....we gotta get some things done here--and fast! A non-specific "other" can't do that.
And here is another beef from me--I think that as long as one is a registered voter, and can produce the proper precinct #, we ought to be able to vote anywhere in the state. Call me crazy....

Re: Independent Voting
Dear Crazy:
People who were into "technology" 30 years ago knew that this would be one possible positive avenue to pursue with what was envisioned in computerdom. But instead of positive progress we got more abstraction, more false images, more false accusations, more manipulated polling numbers and opinions, more obstructionist laws to prevent people from looking into the dung-heap to find out which animal(s) created it...in short we all were obliged to become more confused and willing to give up more of our basic rights so that others would have the unlimited "opportunity" to accumulate more wealth. Think this was/is an accident ?
By the way...you and yours are still in my mind and prayers.
flow....
