humilty in religion

Luk 18:9 And to some who trusted in themselves as just and despised others, he spoke also this parable:
Luk 18:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray: the one a Pharisee and the other a publican.
Luk 18:11 The Pharisee standing, prayed thus with himself: O God, I give thee thanks that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, as also is this publican.
Luk 18:12 I fast twice in a week: I give tithes of all that I possess.
Luk 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not so much as lift up his eyes towards heaven; but struck his breast, saying: O God, be merciful to me a sinner.
Luk 18:14 I say to you, this man went down into his house justified rather than the other: because every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled: and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

what i would like to ask, is do other religions teach such humility, if so, could you maybe post such verses?

thanks
paul

" Rabban Yochanan the son of Zakkai received the tradition from Hillel and Shammai. He would say: If you have learned much Torah, do not take credit for yourself---it is for this that you have been formed."

Avot 2:8

"1. Akavia the son of Mahalalel would say: Reflect upon three things and you will not come to the hands of transgression. Know from where you came, where you are going, and before whom you are destined to give a judgement and accounting. From where you came--from a putrid drop; where you are going--to a place of dust, maggots and worms; and before whom you are destined to give a judgement and accounting--before the supreme King of Kings, the Holy One, blessed be He."

ibid. 3:1

"Rabbi Levitas of Yavneh would say: Be very, very humble, for the hope of mortal man is worms."

ibid. 4:4

Re: humilty in religion

Hi Paul,

I suppose it depends on how you would define humility as opposed to humiliation. For me they are radically different ideas. Many religions practice denigration of self in order to overcome ego, others rely on an innate knowingness that while our true nature is good it can be covered over by layers of incorrect understanding and a false sense of self.
As a Buddhist I understand my worth and the beauty inherrent in what a human being is. I also understand that beauty is in everything and everyone and therefore nothing and no one is "special"
So while humility is an important aspect of all religion not all paths teach it the same way, or with the same definition in mind.

Peace

Mark

"They who are the beloved of God... should conduct themselves in such manner that the earth upon which they tread may never be allowed to address to them such words as these: 'I am to be preferred above you. For witness, how patient I am in bearing the burden which the husbandman layeth upon me. I am the instrument that continually imparteth unto all beings the blessings with which He Who is the Source of all grace hath entrusted me. Notwithstanding the honor conferred upon me, and the unnumbered evidences of my wealth - a wealth that supplieth the needs of all creation - behold the measure of my humility, witness with what absolute submissiveness I allow myself to be trodden beneath the feet of men....'

None come to mind at the moment but I've read some really beautiful ones from Native American Wise Men and Women. Also from ancient China.
