I see you are suspended so I am not sure whether you read this message or not, but for everyone else who is interested, Brian is absolutely right about Hindu is derived from Sindhu. However I would just like to add a few details. Since an initial "s" almost is absent in Persian, the Persians used an "h" instead. From Persia to Greece India became known as the Wester River or Indos. The Indians themsleves knew their land as Jambudvipa(the jambu tree) or Bharatavarsa(sons of bharata). When the Muslims arrived the persian name was reinvented as Hindustan. The Greek Indos, which later became known as India maybe has been the most popular term. pirayaani |
