Groups Split Over ESPN's 'F--- Jesus'-Bomb

Religious rights groups are split on whether ESPN's Dana Jacobson should be fired for making comments derisive of Jesus Christ.

Bill Donahue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, said Thursday he is dropping plans to seek dismissal of the popular young host. Donahue told Cybercast News Service that he reached his decision after conversations with top ESPN executives this morning.

"This is the first time that ESPN has ever made public an internal disciplinary measure, and while I don't feel at liberty to get into all the details I got into with these officials, I pressed them hard, and I'm convinced that the message has been delivered," Donahue said...Cont'd

ESPN shelves host for 'F--- Jesus' rant
ESPN has issued a one-week suspension to anchorwoman Dana Jacobson for a profane rant at a celebrity roast in which she said, "F--- Jesus," according to sources.

The Chicago Tribune said the sports TV network declined to confirm the suspension, but ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said, "Her actions and comments were inappropriate and we've dealt with it."

The news came one day after WND reported a Catholic advocacy group charged the sports TV network had failed to take appropriate action and did not offer a sufficient apology for Jacobson's outburst, in which she "attacked Jesus Christ."...Cont'd

And you are surprised by this? Here is the kicker. Muslims snickered at the lack of action and outrage by the Christians. Here is the truth. The company did the appropriate thing. Maybe she'll learn from it, so might others, but no one dies because of it. Jesus wouldn't want it any other way. Now hopefully someone will reach out to her.

Personally, I believe in freedom of speech. People can say what they want and I've heard those types of rants before. Jesus taught to love your enemies and pray for your persecutors, so that's what I try to do. If no one is harmed, and I really don't think Jesus can be harmed by people saying nasty things, I consider it a waste of my effort to focus on.

I think it's best to ignore stuff like this because attention is typically what someone like that *wants.* By putting up a huge fuss, Christians draw more attention to it than the original arse who said the stuff ever did on their own. Just look at Anton La Vey and the Church of Satan. The guy didn't even believe in Satan, but he was good at marketing because he knew if he took the symbol and name of Satan, he'd get a ton of publicity. And boy, did he.

I just refuse to play the game. If it isn't harming anyone, I pay no attention to it. People's asinine remarks will probably come back to bite them in the long run anyway, and while I don't think such comments will send people to hell, they are evidence that people are already living without recognizing Christ's love, which I find sad. I feel more sorry for people who are so vehemently against God and/or Jesus than anything else.

No Chris, that's "touchdown Jesus". I believe that the lady was referring to another iteration of the Man.
BTW what's your take on the events in Kenya ? Do you believe it may be somehow obliquely related to Barack's run for President ?

Re: Groups Split Over ESPN's 'F--- Jesus'-Bomb

Kenya is transitioning from one party rule. Kenya's government since its independence has been rife with nepotism and corruption. Kenya has a stable economy, but it's corporate structure is largely expatriate, and mid level business is dominated by Indians and other asians. There is very little opportunity left for the bulk of african Kenyans. The tribal violence really isn't specifically ethnically motivated. Kikuyus and Luos have lived with each other for a long time. It's a political rivalry because of the Kikuyu's historical grip on government since Jomo Kenyatta. To run as the opposition candidate one must galvanize the Luo vote. The populist rhetoric and sloganeering necessary to run from that position naturally stimulates tribal ethnocentrism among Luos. Tribal identity is a natural scape goat in the violence, but the underlying tension is created by the stark class disparity between haves and have nots, and the people's outrage at their lousy, corrupt government.

Barak Obama is like a rock star in Kenya. I understand they named a beer for him. His father is Kenyan, and I'm sure many Kenyans are following his run for the presidency with great interest. If a black man gets elected President in America it's going to be a HUGE, global event. I don't know what kind of influence his campaign is having on Kenyan politics. I don't know if his family in Kenya is politically connected or what tribe they're from. He doesn't look Luo to me.

"Kikuyus and Luos have lived with each other for a long time."
But they seldom intermingled. Now there are Kikuyu shopowners in the middle of Luo etc. territory and this causes a lot of envy.
"I don't know if his family in Kenya is politically connected or what tribe they're from. He doesn't look Luo to me."
He is half-Luo (and half-Kansan). His family has no prominence. There was a joke going around Kenya that "someone from his race could never get elected president in Kenya!"
