Big Small Big Small
this is an illusion question. it is not a belief that i know of but it may have something to do with belief.
if you have ever seen Pink Floyds the Wall, then you should relate. there is a scene where Bob Geldof is sitting in a chair with a lamp next to it and the room gets bigger & bigger in his illusion, while the chair he is stiing in & himself appear to get smaller & smaller. I have done that kind of illusion. just wondering if others have done it & i am talking WITHOUT using any drugs, just by concentrating. i can do it both ways- make the room get bigger & I shrink or make myself & the chair get bigger & the room gets smaller. it is hard to explain how to do the illusion & it is a gradual increase or decrease in size & not done all at once. i first remember doing this at about age 10. anyone? or anything similar to what I am trying to say? in the meantime here are some cool illusions to see, but this is not the same thing i am talking about: http://www.skytopia.com/project/illusion/illusion.html |

Can't say I've done that in particular though I've experience fore-shortening, as if the horizon leaps to me. More broadly I agree that mediation and concentration can be plenty visual without need of drugs.

Generally, in a very relaxed state, there are all sorts of visuals you can play with - though you may find focusing your mind on questions in such instances offers better friuts. ![]() Great illusions site, by the way. ![]() |

Yes this has happened to me say around six years or so ago I experienced such a thing... half way through the second period.... Far right side of the ice rink skating fast.... I got cross checked by number 66 Jamie Banks... right on the chin.... My head bounced off the ice a few times but when I was finally motionless I gazed up and focused on the six hockey players and ref looking back down with odd looks on their faces staring at me like I just passed wind or something and between them and the roof of the arena... there was this zooming kinda feeling I admit.... Jamie may of shared the same experience in the 3rd period.... *insert evil chuckle here*

Re: Big Small Big Small
Namaste bandit,
thank you for the post. in my tradition, we practice several different types of meditation and several different types of meditational foci. when one has some skill in the methods there is a peculiar thing which can happen.. well, peculiar since it isn't something which we normally experience. we term this the Diamond Drill and it is experienced as a sort of swirling and whirling sensation which seems to spin and drill deeper and deeper into the consciousness of the being. it can be rather disconcerting the first few times it happens as the associated feeling is one of a dissolution of perceptions and mental elaborations. i've had the experience of size and time dilation during some of my tantric practices. these can be difficult to incorporate into our normal routine and conditioned mental processes. metta, ~v |

i guess it is practiced by some. i think i agree that it can have an emotional effect though it has always come natural for me & can't say for sure. it seems like i vaguely remember starting the swirling once, but stopped because i did not really enjoy that one. i am glad to know others who have experienced it because i have never talked to anyone about this before. it is complicated enough to explain, let alone explain to someone how to do it. Diamond Drill sounds like a good term for it. |
