5 books
Pretty simple, marooned on a desert island you can choose 5 books to take with you. No anthologies or complete works of.
On the Road - Jack Kerouac
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
David Copperfield - Charles Dickens
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Ken Kesey
Something Happened - Joseph Heller

Re: 5 books
I guess the Bible is an anthology...hmmm
How to build a boat, by Will I. Float
How to survive, by I. M. Standed
Creating Electricity, by Sol R. Panel
Water Purification, by D. Sal Nate
What to do with spare time, by Sol I. Tare
Seriously, contemplating having the books with me when I get stranded, that is a tough one.... and even thinking about what they would be.
Would have to be something that developed new and deeper meanings with each read. Or something that would actually be extremely useful for survival...really tough question for me.

Re: 5 books
I'm worried that the books I choose are going to have a serious effect on the way my mind works, after having them as one of very few creative stimuli available to me in an isolated environment. With that in mind:
A Clockwork Orange
Stranger in a Strange Land
Notes from Underground
Farenheight 451
and finally a blank notebook for all of my raving and ranting (if I can't have a writing implement, that's even better. One step closer to madness. )

Re: 5 books
Kindest Regards!
Great exercise!
For inspiration, the Fourth Book of Maccabees
For practicality, the first Foxfire book
For necessity, FM 21-76, Department of the Army Field Manual, "Survival"
For food identification, Peterson's Field Guide, "Edible Wild Plants"
For medical reasons, Peterson's Field Guide, "Medicinal Plants"
The last two may have to be adjusted depending where this "deserted island" is located.

Re: 5 books
Am I marooned on this island? Assuming I am:
1. A survival manual.
2. A book on celestial navigation.
3. A book on basic physics.
4. Some sort of intense poetry.
5. Something by Leonora Leet.

Re: 5 books
If I may go on a little tangent...
Vaj, what do Buddhists think of Herman Hesse's Siddhartha? I know it's a novel, not historical, but I love the ideas in it. Does it accurately depict Buddhist ideas or not so much?
Thanks,
Sarah

Re: 5 books
Namaste Sarah,

Re: 5 books
Can it be a tropical island instead of a desert island?
1 - The best survival manual on the market.
2 - A book on creative writing.
3 - A 10,000 page note book.
4 - A book on creating paints from plants and minerals.
5 - A 10,000 page art / paint pad.
